Abstract

Improving the ship design process requires objective data on the hydrodynamic and kinematic characteristics of motion in rough seas, which cannot always be determined through calculation. At the ONMU research basin, an experimental setup has been modernized to determine the hydrodynamic and kinematic characteristics of vertical, transverse-horizontal, and longitudinal rolling of ship models. The paper provides a detailed description and shows diagrams and general views of the experimental setups. A large volume of experimental studies was conducted on two models of promising new-generation ships ‒ a dry cargo ship and a tanker ‒ whose designs were created at the Marine Engineering Bureau. Selected results of the experimental studies are presented, demonstrating the operational capability of the modernized measurement complex and the reliability of the obtained results. The data obtained can be used to verify numerical calculations of the hydrodynamic and kinematic characteristics of ship motion and to improve ship design methodologies.
