Landscape-oriented approach to coastal protection of Ukraine’s marine shores

Abstract
The article presents a comprehensive analysis of the current state of Ukraine’s marine coasts within the Azov and Black Seas, with a focus on degradation processes driven by both natural and anthropogenic factors. Key limitations of traditional engineering approaches to coastal protection are examined, particularly their insufficient long-term effectiveness and their tendency to disrupt the natural dynamics of coastal processes. A comparative analysis of international experience has been conduc-ted, demonstrating a transition to integrated coastal management models based on nature-based solutions and elements of landscape design. The regulatory and legal preconditions for implementing such approaches in Ukraine are assessed, and directions for their adaptation are identified. The study substantiates the feasibility of incorporating landscape design as a component of coastal protection infrastructure, capable of ensuring ecological sustainability, functional efficiency, and spatial integrity of coastal territories.
