Providing safe depths on waterways
Main Article Content
Abstract
One of the most important and fundamental processes for ensuring maritime navigation safety is maintaining safe water depths in waterways, port water areas, anchorages, and approach channels. The creation and maintenance of adequate depths for the safe passage of vessels are achieved through the use of dredging fleets. Dredging operations involve the removal of silt, sand, gravel, and other bottom sediments from the seabed, rivers, lakes, and port water areas using mechanical equipment, followed by their transportation to a receiving hopper or disposal at a designated location. The primary purpose of dredging operations is to eliminate navigational hazards, including:
- Prevention of grounding: ensuring sufficient depth and safe vessel draft clearance;
- Widening and maintenance of navigation channels: preserving optimal channel width and depth for safe maneuvering;
- Sedimentation control: timely removal of bottom deposits and accumulated sediments;
- Support of navigational aids: installation of navigation marks in cleared and maintained areas.
The safety of dredging operations is governed by strict standards and requires a highly qualified professional approach.
